Family Recovery Center in introduces Project Dawn in Jefferson County

Family Recovery Center in Steubenville wants to train Jefferson County residents to use a nasal spray to reverse an opioid overdose.

You’ve heard many stories about first responders carrying Naloxone, and stocking it in schools.

Now a program aims to put it in everyday homes so family members and friends have a chance at saving loved ones from an opioid overdose.

‘Project Dawn’ is aimed at avoiding deaths with Naloxone.

Family Recovery Center in Steubenville wants to train Jefferson County residents to use a nasal spray to reverse an opioid overdose.

“We're going to educate family members as to what Project Dawn is all about,” said Eloise Traina, CEO, Family Recovery Center.

She explained you'll be trained on the signs of an overdose, plus how to respond and administer the Naloxone.

Then you'll go home with a kit that contains the Naloxone, a face mask, and instructions.

“I think we hear more of the negative response -- John Doe has had it 17 times -- and people don’t want to offer him the 18th time, but if it's our family member, we want to make sure we bring life back to them,” Traina said.

Family Recovery Center launched Project Dawn in Columbiana County in November 2017.

“It was received well,” Traina said. “We probably gave out close to 200 kits, and I’ve done a little research, maybe of the 200 we’ve given out, maybe 15-20 had been used.”

A 14,000 grant from the Ohio Department of Health will allow it to expand into Jefferson County next month.

“Unfortunately, some people who run around in groups that use, somebody may be carrying, like the designated driver, I guess that's OK because somebody else is going to be saved from it,” Traina said.

Every person saved is another chance at recovery.

You can get your Project Dawn training and kit the first Wednesday of every month, beginning June 6.

Stop by Family Recovery Center in Steubenville from 6-8 p.m.
