Crews respond to early morning Wellsburg fire
BROOKE COUNTY, W. Va. —
Crews responded to a massive structure fire in Wellsburg Saturday morning along Commerce Street Extension.
In a video sent from a viewer from across the Ohio River in Brilliant, smoke and flames can be seen from miles away.
The fire started just after 7:30 a.m. It was initially reported that the fire was contained to one side of the building.
“When the first trucks arrived here the building was intact as they were discharging the lines and there was some sort of explosion and partial collapse of the structure itself,” said Wellsburg 2nd Assistant Chief Tom Diserio.
Eight local fire departments responded to the call, including the Brooke County Tanker Task Force due to pressure issues with the area's fire hydrants.
The city of Wellsburg has been feeding the Bethany Pike area with (a) four-inch service line,” Diserio said. “Hydrants are sparse the further you get from the city, so the Tanker Task Force was called in to assist with this.”
Some power lines were down due to the fire, with about 70 people in the area without power.
Once crews cleared the scene, the power companies were able to gain access and restore power.
No one was in the home when the fire started.
“The neighbor that reported the structure fire stated that he noticed that the homeowner had left approximately half hour prior to the start of the fire,” Diserio said. “At this time, there is no reports of anybody inside the structure - everybody got out safe - there were no injuries to firefighters and EMS on the scene.”
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
