City, county to discuss gas lease on city properties
The city of Wheeling and Ohio County leaders will soon discuss entering into a gas lease on city properties.
Vice Mayor Chad Thalman says the properties are mostly abandoned, located on old landfills where no neighbors are nearby.
Thalman says the city and county could make hundreds of thousands of dollars if they lease the land.
Thalman says it involves 336 acres at around $6,000 an acre and 18.5% in royalties.
“The money would be unrestricted and the city could use it for anything more than likely it would be used for economic development, paving playgrounds and other city functions,” Thalman said.
Thalman says they will discuss the matter further at Tuesday's city council meeting.
