Buckeye Local School District needs help in the kitchen

The Buckeye Local School District is in need of some extra helping hands after dealing with a substitute shortage.

In August, we reported on a shortage of bus drivers within the district. Now, they’re short in the kitchen.

"We have one sub right now for the whole district, and we have four buildings, and we're just desperate for subs,” said Denise Smith, director of food service for Buckeye Local Schools.

Smith is in charge of staffing for the high school, along with North, South, and West elementary schools.

She said they've been short staffed for 2 years, but this year has been the worst, with only one substitute cook for all four of the schools.

"We've had many days where we've had more than one cook off in different buildings, so they've ran short-handed, and it's tough to get the food out quickly enough and timely enough for the students to eat," Smith said.

Day-to-day duties include preparing food, cleaning, and doing the dishes after all the students eat.

A typical shift is from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

"Our main goal is to make sure we feed the kids every day,” Smith said. “No matter what the cooks have to do, we have to make sure that the kids eat.”

If you would like to sub, Smith is willing to work with your schedule. To apply, fill out an application at the business office.

"If you would like to sub, and your children go to Adena, I would make sure you stay in that building,” Smith said. “I wouldn't make you travel to the high school, or Brilliant."
