Veterans Day isn't until Saturday, but veterans were honored at Brooke High School on Thursday morning.

A touching ceremony ended with a walk through the halls of Brooke High with some little friendly faces – preschoolers saying ‘thank you.’

More than 70 veterans were honored at the assembly, a long time tradition at the school.

One by one, each veteran’s name was read aloud, along with the years served and branch of military.

There was also a tribute to Michael Smith Jr., a BHS graduate, who lost his life serving our country.

Smith’s his family was honored with a plaque that will hang at the school.

“We do this to honor our veterans,” Principal Tim Pannet said. “Without our veterans’ service and sacrifice, we could not live in a free society. Our students need to understand that and know what a privilege it is to be an American citizen."

Each veteran who served in the Army, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard and Air Force stood for a round of applause.

The day ended with a thank you from preschool students and a breakfast.
