A serious accident on Washington Pike in Wellsburg on Tuesday morning sent three people to the hospital, including a Brooke County Sheriff’s Deputy.

It took place around 7:30 a.m., and also involved two community members.

“We got up on scene, there was two vehicles involved, a sheriff's cruiser, which was on its roof, and another vehicle in the middle of the road that was badly damaged,” said Brooke County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Rich Arthurs.

Sgt. Kyler Ferguson of the sheriff's department was off-duty. He was traveling east to go out of state for some training.

Arthurs said Ferguson was in the passing lane when a car pulled out of a driveway and attempted to head west.

“The officer tried to go to the right, to avoid striking them,” Arthurs said. “He struck the vehicle, causing his vehicle to go up to the hillside and roll over onto its roof.”

Ferguson was unconscious when crews arrived, but regained consciousness and was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital. The sheriff's department received an update on his condition just after 11 a.m. and said Ferguson didn't break a bone and was just "banged up." He was being prepared to be released.

Two unnamed civilians, including a juvenile, were taken to Ohio Valley Medical Center.

“We're more concerned about making sure everybody is OK,” Arthurs said. “Our officers along with the two civilians that were involved.”

The road was closed in both directions for over an hour.
