Bomb situation defused in Adena

Explosions rocked the village of Adena on Thursday morning as bomb squads detonated several pipe bombs.

A neighbor who acquired an abandoned home called police after learning the house was hiding secrets. There were bombs in the basement.

A specialized bomb squad was summoned from Youngstown to sweep and extract them.

"We got called here for three live pipe bombs, one being metal, the two probably being cardboard with nails attached to them. We disrupted one of them and countercharged the other two," Youngstown officer Robert DiMaiolo said.

Crews pushed bystanders back as they detonated the charges nearly 300 yards away. The neighbor who acquired the house didn't know it had a history of secrets.

"The house is a vacant house. It's been vacant for about 10 years. I think it was 2006, 2007 there was a shooting there, a person got shot in the abdomen," Short Creek Joint Fire District Fire Chief Jim Horton said.

The shooter in that incident was former New Athens Police Officer James Kessler. According to published reports, Kessler showed up at the home and shot a man in an apparent love triangle in 2007. The victim survived. It's not clear how or why the pipe bombs were left in the basement.

"We had secured the house the day before” Horton said. “Padlocked the doors so nobody could get in and notified the neighbors that they were in there."

There’s a lesson to be learned. …

"You should always report when you find explosives,” DiMaiolo said. “If the firemen would have went in there if there was a fire, or kids playing in there and light it up, it could have gone off."

Adena officials say there is no present danger to the public. As for the neighbor who called it in, she says she's thankful for the past 2 days of work from the bomb squad and other crews.

She plans to have the house torn down.
