The opioid epidemic is so bad that the Jefferson County commissioners sued a number of pharmaceutical companies last year.

Evidence of how bad the epidemic has become in the county was presented at the commissioners weekly meeting by the board of health.

In its annual report, 33 deaths were attributed to drug overdoses.

“It’s a major problem,” Commissioner Thomas Graham said. “Prevention is the key to make sure these people don't do it in the first place because once they are on it, once they're addicted very quickly, then it's the cost human problem across the board.”

Graham was unable to update the status of the lawsuit because of a gag order put in place.
