Belmont County gearing for May 2 special election

Belmont County officials are spreading the word on the upcoming special election in May.

Eighteen county precincts will be open for the May 2 special election.

Five issues will be on the ballot, including levies for Bellaire and Buckeye Local school districts.

Two fire levies will be decided on in Powhatan Point and York Township with another village levy for Yorkville.

Belmont County Board of Elections Director Bill Shubat says while it's been quiet post-presidential election, traditionally, voters in the county make their voices heard.

"People just care more about issues and candidates than other areas,” Shubat said. “I’ve seen places that are a lot larger and had a 10 percent voter turnout and Belmont County would have 30-35 percent. I attribute that to our people."
