Alabama man found guilty of sexual assault of pre-teen in Wheeling

Lamont Dees took the stand in his own defense and said several times he never touched the victim, but jurors didn't believe him and he now faces 11-25 years in prison.

After almost 4 hours of deliberation, a jury in Ohio county has found an Alabama man guilty of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl.

Lamont Dees took the stand in his own defense and said several times he never touched the victim, but jurors didn't believe him and he now faces 11-25 years in prison.

He said he took on a father role to the victim, but she then threatened him and blackmailed him.

Prosecutors say it's not true.

They say she had a stepfather/daughter relationship with Dees, but it took a dark turn when he raped her at a Wheeling Island home.

Evidence was presented during the trial that included text messages, video and testimony from the victim and the victim's mother, Dees' former fiancé.

The incident happened between 2013 and 2014 while the pre-teen was staying with Dees on a weekend visit.

"This 12-year-old child realizes that this man that she loved and trusted, and confided in, had just sexually assaulted her, and he said ‘don't tell your mother,’” Ohio County Assistant Prosecutor Jenna Perkins said.

"My client became afraid, and he didn't know what to do,” defense attorney Edward Gillison said. “He is thinking everyone is going to believe this and everyone is going to think I harmed this child, and all I can say is I didn't do it.’”

Deputies took Dees into custody after the verdict was read.

A sentencing date has not yet been set.
