Updated: Friday, July 4 2014, 06:24 PM EDT

WEIRTON, W.Va. --

Fourth of July festivities were in full gear across the Ohio Valley Friday. In Weirton, residents enjoyed a big parade and then continued the celebrations at the Weirton Event Center.

Hundreds lined up along Main Street in Weirton for the parade Friday morning.

"It's always been a great parade, the Renaissance, they've done a great job coordinating this event," Mayor George Kondik said. "We have the fireworks, we have the concerts tonight. It's a great turnout, there are a lot of participants and the kids really enjoy a 4th of July parade."

Kondik said this year's parade was the best yet and he hasn't missed a parade in 18 years.

"It's something that's not this year; it's been like this for a long, long time. We have a great community, we have great participation from the families and the kids," Kondik said.

Weirton resident Aaron Rowe said that the parade was a great way to celebrate the holiday with his family.

"Small town USA celebrating the birth of our nation, it's a beautiful spectacular day, it couldn't get better," Rowe said.

The celebrations didn't end there. Other festivities for the day include Renaissance Weirton's first-ever Band Blast Competition and of course, fireworks.

Although the city has been facing some financial worries, the Weirton Medical Center helped raise enough funds for the fireworks to take place this year.

"This year's fireworks, tremendous, better than last year believe it or not," Kondik said.
