Renovation at local church

The plans are in effect and ready to go --- Bishop Jeffrey Monforton was very excited to share ideas that are in the works for the cathedral's next evolution. It's the spiritual home for many Steubenville Catholics --- Holy Name Cathedral, on Fifth Street, has been a fixture in the city since it was originally built in the 1800s, then rebuilt in the 1950s.

"People have reminded me of growing up at Holy Name Cathedral who are going to school there, and certainly for the church's presence in the south end," said Monforton.
Now the church is in for its second major renovation. Monforton says there were two options on the table.
"It's either renovate the cathedral or take it down," said Monforton.

They've opted to renovate --- preserving the cathedral's history and returning some of the features that were taken out in the 1950s. It will have one bell tower, with real bells , but the work will not happen overnight.

"Obviously we live in a materialistic world, and we're looking at probably the least amount of time; 18 months to 24 -- a couple of years," he said.

And it won't come cheap. The price tag is in the millions. And the renovation fund so far has amount a million and a half dollars to start. The church is continuing to take donations and recognizing the people chipping in.

"We've had a number of people and structures from the tower to the altar to have their family name more on a plaque in which the various families will be certainly recognized," said Monforton.

Connecting the dots for the overall plan, the parking lot will be expanded and the building will be wired to stream live Masses to the masses over the Internet.
While the parish is being renovated, there can't be people inside holding Mass, so during the project, Mass is being moved to Holy Rosary, which has been closed since 2008.
