JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio -- Emergency crews answered a call early Thursday morning in Mount Pleasant for an unresponsive 1-month-old baby. The baby was taken to a local hospital where it was pronounced dead, setting off an investigation into what caused the death.
Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla said the baby was sleeping between its parents.
"I've had things happen in the past where people have rolled over on their children and suffocated them," Abdalla said. "Terrible things like that happen, or it could be SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). We don't know."
Abdalla said investigators executed a search warrant on the home, which is located on East Street.
"Well there was some drug paraphernalia -- different type of drug paraphernalia -- possibly pills," Abdalla said. "We have to make sure we have the proper prescriptions for them. Some powder residue was in there and we have to test to see. I don't believe it was cocaine or heroin but we want to make sure."
Abdalla said his office has investigated a number of these cases in the past, and attention to detail is crucial as they carry out their investigation.
"When you're investigating the death of a young child, you want to make damn sure that, whatever the cause of death is, natural or was there foul play? I mean you've got to go from A-Z to make sure there was no intent or no criminal action on anybody."
Abdalla said they won't know an exact cause of death until the coroner in Licking County, where the baby was taken, issues a report.
