Old bikes piling up at former state pen in Moundsville

MOUNDSVILLE, W.Va--

Old bicycles are piling up at the former state penitentiary in Moundsville.

The bikes are unclaimed and many are rusted and broken, but have been recovered by the Moundsville Police Department.

The chief tells NEWS9 that there are hundreds of bikes and it's getting out of hand.

"People find them in their yards and there is nowhere to put them so they call us and we store them," said Mitchell. "It's a combination of things people take other people's bicycle and part of the problem is if you have one in your shed or garage you don't know when it came up missing."

Mitchell said this is a problem in every city. He said they plan to scrap the bikes and the money will go toward the city's general fund.

"We have given bikes that are repairable away, but most of these are very old and rusted," said Michell.

He recommends marking your bike, so if it is stolen or lost, it can be identified. He also said to report it to police and call back to see if it's been recovered.
