"Please stay off drugs. Please just don't get involved with drugs."
Those are the words of Ohio Governor John Kasich, who isn't just asking, he's promising to do battle with the Devil when it comes to heroin.
Our sister station's Chris Vanocur in Columbus sat down with Kasich to discuss his stance on heroin use.
"It's an ongoing nightmare," Kasich said. "So if I am in a position where I can do something to relieve that, you better believe I am going to do it."
Helping Ohioans keep off heroin is almost a calling for Kasich.
"The scriptures are clear about our obligation for the poor, the disadvantaged," he said. "I just think that's a beautiful thing about faith. The Lord expects us to not ignore these folks."
The governor also says an addict's battle against heroin lasts a lifetime; that they're never out of the woods.
Does Kasich if he ever tells his own daughters about the dangers of heroin?
"Do I ever talk to them?" he asked. "They're like, 'Daddy, how many times are you going to tell us this?' I said, 'I am going to tell you this about every day. Don't go there. Don't put a ball and chain around your ankle. Don't. Because it is a hell, it's a personal hell that you don't need to put yourself through.'"
