WEIRTON, W.V.-- A mother and son are behind bars after Weirton police responded to a call of shots fired.
Officials say when they responded to the call along Fernwood Road and found 38-year-old James Long hiding inside his home. When police attempted to arrest him, Long resisted and pulled a switch blade knife on one of the officers. The police subdued him and place him under  arrest without incident.
Then officials discovered that Long’s mother, 66-year-old Carole Long had hidden a gun inside a cardboard box in their garage.
Officials say they’re thankful no one was hurt during the ordeal.

"We do what we can to make sure no one gets hurt and affects the arrest. That there's no possibility of the officers, suspects, or innocent bystanders being injured" says Lt. Greg Moodie with the Weirton Police Department.

James Long is being charged with attempted malicious assault on a police officer, wanton endangerment and resisting arrest.  Carole Long is being charged with obstructing an officer.  They will both be arraigned by a Brooke County magistrate.
