Mike McVey final trial date set
JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio

Suspended Superintendent of Steubenville City Schools Mike McVey went before a judge Monday morning to ask for more time before his trial.  The trial was originally set for Aug. 18, but has now been pushed back to Oct. 14.

McVey's attorney, Charles Bean, asked for a continuance for experts to evaluate additional information that is being copied onto drives.  Bean said the amount of information is 30 terabytes and will not be available until July 28.

Prosecutor Scott Longo agreed that it would not be possible to complete the report in 21 days, which is what is normally expected.  Longo said the defense worked with the prosecution's forensics specialist and coordinated the transfer of media and hard drives and also determined how long it would take to evaluate the information.

Judge Patricia Cosgrove accepted the motion to postpone the trial, but said this is the last time she will grant an extension and will not continue the case again.

McVey was indicted on three counts of obstructing justice, plus single counts of tampering with evidence and falsification.

The judge ordered the defense computer forensic expert to generate a report no later than Sept. 15. Another court order is in place on Sept. 26 for a list of witnesses expected to be called at trial, along with any requests for jury instructions.
