Marshall County teacher helps students in need

Updated: Wednesday, July 23 2014, 04:47 PM EDT

MOUNDSVILLE, W.Va.--

The Marshall County Back to School fun fair was held Tuesday at the former state penitentiary in Moundsville.

Hundreds of students attended the event put on by community members, businesses and the school system. Students were given backpacks, notebooks, pencils and pens, food, haircuts and more.

Susie Baker, a teacher in Marshall County, is the brains behind the event.

"This event is not necessarily done through my job, it's more my family and friends. The community and school system helps me buy the backpacks," said Baker.

Baker said the event began 14 years ago and has really flourished. She said she started the event because as a kid she was in need, and often got reminded of her unfortunate position by other students and teachers.

"I grew up very, very poor and didn't have things when school began," said Baker. "Iwas the child with the short hair because of head lice and I understand what it's like to be poor, and in need and go to school," said Baker.

Baker says if you didn't get your supplies and are in need you can contact her at 304-845-5973.

Baker said she couldn't put on the event without wonderful sponsors and the community's help.
