First Challenge Wheeling fundraiser a success

Updated: Monday, June 23 2014, 04:05 PM EDT

WHEELING, W.Va. -

Carpet Showcase Flooring Center held a fundraising event on Saturday challenging people to a scavenger race throughout the downtown Wheeling area, called the  Challenge Wheeling.

Teams weren't just competing to win cash prizes but to help raise money for the Youth Services System.

"We're Wheeling natives and we just decided to come out and support the Youth Services System," Melissa Kenamond said.

"I think it's a great way to come out and support Wheeling and YSS, we're really looking forward to being out here," Carter Kenamond said.

Teams were given 12 clues and they had only three hours to hustle from clue to clue on foot or by public transportation. For each clue they found, they had to take pictures for proof.

The first place winners won $500, the second place winners won $100 and the third place winners won $50.

Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Carpet Showcase Flooring Center Christie Contraguerro said she was happy to see a good turnout because it was also a celebration for both Carpet Showcase Flooring Center and Youth Services System.

"Carpet Showcase Flooring Center is celebrating 40 years as is Youth Services and so this is just an opportunity to celebrate our generous people here, our beautiful city and to get everyone downtown and having fun," Contraguerro said.

They raised over $10,000 to go to the Youth Services System and they hope to hold another Wheeling Challenge next year.
