Rumors of a new Ohio River bridge near Wellsburg, W.Va. have spanned decades. Officials say soon, a long-awaited bridge connecting Wellsburg and Brilliant, Ohio will become a reality.
The cost of the bridge is being estimated around $120 million. With just a few more finalization steps, the construction would begin in 2 years.
Residents in Wellsburg have been waiting more than 30 years for a bridge. Mayor Sue Simonetti said they now have visible evidence construction of the bridge is going to be started around 2016.
"So that’s really exciting news for Brooke County, for Wellsburg, for anybody for economic development because that opens another passage to the county," Simonetti said.
Simonetti thinks the valley is really in need of another bridge, especially with the heavy in the Weirton and Steubenville areas lately.
"With this recent bypass that we have at Steubenville, it’s putting a heavy load on the Market Street Bridge and that’s concerning to me."
Business owner Keith Malinky said the new bridge would really help bring in more customers.
"Being close, right across the river, they jump on the bridge, come across, have lunch and back home, great,” he said.
Simonetti said the best part about it is the convenience it will provide.
"It’s going to be so much more convenient for the people of our area who travel to Steubenville or Brilliant,” she said. “There are a lot of people who work at the power plant, and they've had to travel to Steubenville and across and back down again."
Officials in the state of Ohio have yet to sign the interstate agreement. West Virginia officials have. The project would take around 4 years to complete.
