Harrison County, Oh

The boom of the oil and gas industry in the Ohio Valley has brought hundreds of jobs and millions of dollars to the local economy.

Some of the beneficiaries are local businesses.

Jon Jones is the vice president of sales at D & J Sales and Service in Harrison County. He sells farm equipment. Jones said the oil and gas industry has made farmers in the area wealthy.

“Where they used to just break even, now, the oil and gas boom gives them that little bit of extra that they need to buy a new piece of equipment. So, yes, it’s been good,” Jones said.

The business has grown by 35 percent in the last three years.

The increase in profits has allowed D & J Sales to hire additional staff and make improvements to the building.

“We really didn’t see it coming. Five years ago if you’d have told me this would happen. I wouldn’t have believed you,” Jones said.

Another place that has seen a growth in business is Capraro’s Restaurant in Hopedale.

“Since they’ve been coming, I would say over the last two years it’s been a steady increase. Overall, I’d say we have a 10-15 percent up just from them,” owner Lora Espinosa said.

They service the needs of works- especially over the holidays.

“At lunch time we get a lot of takeout orders. Last year, we did Thanksgiving dinners with take out. We had 40-50 we served with that,” Espinosa said.

Both Jones and Espinosa are just enjoying the success while it lasts.

“We’re enjoying the ride, you’re right. I guess, I say we are riding the ship until it sinks,” Jones said.

“Their shoes are kind of muddy but that’s okay. We’re okay with cleaning up after it,” Espinosa said.
