OHIO COUNTY, W.Va. –  The budget is a serious issue in the city of Wheeling.
The city manager predicts Wheeling will be operating at a $250,000 deficit soon, but not everyone is for the recommended cuts.
Police and fire personnel and some council members worry cuts to the safety departments could cause a crisis.
The current vacancies at Wheeling's Fire and Police Departments are the most the city has ever had.
Some city leaders say it's feasible, and no one's job will be eliminated.
Some solutions were presented to council at Wednesday's budget meeting. Most council members say they need more information, and they are working with everyone to find answers.
“We need to look at both sides, which is the cause and revenue side, and try to get a consensus,” said Councilman David Miller. “And we're asking citizens, the fire department, the police department, and we did not act on this because there is a lot of depth to this.”
Added Wheeling Firefighter’s Local 12 member Jason Milton: “We don't want to see safety forces taken any lower than they are not only for the fire department, but the police department as well.”
No motion was made to accept the budget Wednesday.
They plan to take the matter up again at the next meeting and that date has not yet been announced.
Leaders say they are still reviewing all their options.
