Parents voice concerns about local high school

Updated: Friday, April 18 2014, 03:23 AM EDT

Monroe County, OH - Rumors have been circulating about Beallsville High School closing and during Switzerland of Ohio School District meeting on Thursday evening, parents wanted answers.
Parents voiced their concerns about their children’s futures at the school but they did not receive a yes or no answer from the school board about the high school closing.
“Where’s Beallsville going to be? Is there going to be a Beallsville? Where are our kids going to be? No one knows. We don’t get an answer to that,” Beallsville High School graduate and concerned grandparent Shirley Brown said.
School board members said they want to do what they can to improve the quality of education with limited finances.
“We’re looking at district-wide issues. We are trying to improve academics at the same time trying to get the district to survive with the finances we have, which are very limited,” Superintendent of Switzerland Ohio School District John Hall said.
Parents of students at Beallsville High School said they understand that finances are tight but they don’t think it’s fair to the students.
“It’s not about closing the school because it’s your alma mater, it’s about the kids’ education and honestly I don’t see how dispersing 100 students throughout the district into two schools that are already overcrowded -- how that’s going to improve the education of our kids,” Brown said.
Hall said the school board will continue to have meetings and review the options for the district.
