OHIO COUNTY, W.Va. -- They’ve quickly become an Ohio Valley tradition on St. Patrick’s Day.

A variation of Highland Games, modeled after Scottish traditions, have been played the last five years locally at McGoverns Pub, located at 200 Ruth Avenue in Mozart outside of Wheeling.

Events contested are Hammer Throw; Stone Put; Sheaf Toss; Caber Toss; Weight Throw and Log Roll. As many as 40 participants have competed in the games at McGoverns. The only qualification is participants must wear a kilt.

“If you’ve ever seen the movie Braveheart, it's really along those lines,” said Matt McGovern, who owns the pub along with his brother Mike. “Heaving of heavy objects throwing heavy objects Irish hammers.

“A lot of guys are out to have fun but some take it serious and try to win the events.”

The games are just a part of the many events going on at this particular Irish Pub on Monday, where live music, beginning with members of the MacDonald Pipe Band, was scheduled for most of the day and evening.

Also, Monday, they had booths set up to “Shave Heads for Hines,” in an effort to raise money and support for a local 2-year-old boy who is battling cancer.
