WEIRTON, W.Va. –  A Weirton man who lost his business in a blaze early Tuesday morning is not only picking up the pieces, he’s keeping his entire community in mind.
Gino Guglielmo is raising funds for others with his annual Wine in the Woods event, as he refuses to let a fire to his own business spark any setbacks.
“It's hard to sleep at night because my mind is racing all the time," Guglielmo said after a fire tore through his investments business.
Despite that, he is doing his best to look ahead. It’s something he says he must do, especially with the biggest fundraising event of his year just around the corner.
He started Wine in the Woods started four years ago to provide scholarships to area high school seniors. It’s an important event even flames couldn't extinguish.
“That's just not what I'm about,” Guglielmo said. “It's still a promise I made to the children, and that's what I’m going to do. It's a beautiful event and it's a lot of fun."
Students will get $1,000 each year they're in college as long as they maintain a 3.0 grade point average and answer to applications. One such question? Describe how you reacted to one of life's toughest hardships.
Guglielmo said he was inspired by some of the stories he read.
He hopes what happened to him can be a lesson to those students getting scholarships as they begin their next journey in life.
“(I’m going to) just keep going, and I think if they see me continue through all this and I'm still giving them $1,000 I'm not backing out of my promise. They'll say, ‘well if he can do it, I can do it.’”
Wine in the Woods takes place from 4-7 p.m. on Sunday, June 8 at the Serbian Picnic Grounds.
Tickets to the event are $10. All of the proceeds go toward the Guglielmo Charitable Scholarship Foundation.
Past scholarship winners are:
Ontasia Petteway, Weir High
Trey Gilliam, Brooke
Ashley Sherman, Brooke
Emalee Hvizdak, Madonna
