Officials excited about Clarendon Hotel revitalization

BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio – “Eloquent in its simplicity” is what the original builder of the Clarendon Hotel said when he opened it in 1890.
It’s an historic structure that’s going back to its roots after plans to revitalize the building were unveiled at a Wednesday morning news conference inside the hotel on Main Street in Downtown St. Clairsville.
It’s a move that caps more than a decade of work as developers have had an eye on re-energizing the building at least that long.
Those associated with the project say they've received 100 percent financing from the local Citizen’s Bank, a gesture developers say is virtually unheard of.
Since it's an historic building, state and federal historic tax credits will be used in the Clarendon's restoration.
“It’s going to be a beautiful building that the community can really be proud of and really put it to a great economic reuse,” St. Clairsville Service Director Dennis Bigger said.
When it's complete, the Clarendon will hold 18 units extended stay, a restaurant below, and developers are tossing around the idea of a coffee shop or an office space to utilize all of the building.
"These old buildings tell a story and everyone likes to connect with that,” said Steve Coon, a partner in the project whose colleagues say he’s never met a building he doesn’t like. "It's probably going to be one of the most popular buildings in the city when we're done. We're so excited.”
