JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio –Knox Township residents, who were told the street lights would go out Monday night, will have lights for a few more days. But starting next week, the lights will go out and stay out for the next 6 months, maybe even longer because of mounting budget problems.
The cost of street lights in New Somerset seems to be just a small percentage of financial problems for Knox Township trustees.
"We have lost almost $24,000 from our general fund in the last four years," trustee Donnie Elder said.
So where did the money go?
Trustees say money problems started years ago when two fiscal officers began making mistakes with the budget.
Those mistakes are now costing the township via fines from the Ohio State Auditor, plus ongoing bills that must be paid.
"These are all bills; it's like it's never ending,” Elder said.
So they’re turning off the street lights to save money.
"It wasn't a popular decision, (but) when you don't have the money you don't have the money,” Elder said.
In the meantime, Knox Township trustees plan to meet this week to discuss what options they have to bring more money in.
Trustees said residents in New Somerset can buy security lights in place of street lights if they wish.
