Community supports Craigslist kidney recipient

Updated: Sunday, May 4 2014, 06:43 PM EDT

Marshall County, W.Va. -

Cindy Prettyman, of Glendale, is currently on dialysis and in need of a kidney transplant. Her prayers for a kidney were answered in February on Craigslist.

Community members came out to support Prettyman and help with her medical expenses Sunday at a benefit spaghetti dinner held at the Glen Dale United Methodist Church.

In February she found out she could have to wait up to 10 years to get a transplant, so her son decided to put an ad on Craigslist – and he found a donor.

“I knew nothing about it, and he called me the very next day and said, ‘Some lady answered the ad I put on Craigslist’ and I’m like, Craigslist?’ Yeah, really,” Prettyman said.

Her donor’s name is Jacklyn Mellott.

“You just know what you’ll do for another individual and what you won’t. You know that, and I figured if I knew someone that needed it I would do it and I didn’t hesitate,” Mellott said.

“I keep telling her that she’s my angel and she says, ‘No I’m not an angel, I’m just a normal person’ but if we had more normal people like her we wouldn’t have to have people on dialysis forever, the rest of their lives,” Prettyman said.

Prettyman just found out that Mellott is a donor match and could have the transplant done as early as June.

And now Mellot isn’t just her angel, she is her best friend.

“Other than…I love her, I told her we’re going to be joined at the hip. She says we’ll be joined at the hip for life, which is true,” Prettyman said.

If you would like to make a donation, checks can be made out to “Cindy’s New Kidney” and are accepted at Bayer Credit Union in Moundsville.
