BRILLIANT, Ohio – A coal truck overturned on Ohio 7 southbound by Brilliant and State Route 151 on Tuesday afternoon, and investigators are still trying to figure out how it happened.
The driver was initially unconscious when first-responders arrived on scene, and they planned to send him by medical helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital. But when officials took him to a field nearby in Brilliant to fly him out, he became responsive and even started to talk.
He was flown to Ohio Valley Medical Center in Wheeling instead.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol tried to piece together what happened from witnesses, who said the truck was driving south on 7 when it started to slow down as it was going to toward the berm. It just continued into the ditch, near a construction zone, slipping the entire load of coal that was inside of his truck.
“When the first responders got to the scene, the driver was not conscious he was not responding to anything so we think there might be something medical going on there,” said Lt. Joe Petty of the OSHP. “But we still have to investigate to see what was going on for sure."
The truck remained on the side of the road after 5 p.m. – more than 3 hours after the wreck occurred.
All of the coal was spilled from the truck and had to be cleaned as well.
