JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio -- Driving around in Steubenville, you’ll see a lot of vacant properties that are boarded up and have a lot of damage.
Well, something is being done about it. Urban Projects Director Chris Petrossi has a list of 72 blighted properties.
Jacob Miller lives on Maryland Avenue. He said you can see these rundown houses everywhere. And they bring other problems.
“Some houses look like they are being used for drugs and stuff like that anyways,” Miller said. “Might as well get rid of them while you can so they are not causing any more problems in the neighborhood.”
These are issues the city hopes to eliminate by taking out these eyesores that have been vacant for years.
“All of the properties that we demolish are in seriously dilapidated condition,” Petrossi said. “There’s cases where we notified the owner or the owner couldn’t be located and failed to act. They’re all wide open and hazards.”
The list goes on and on and the contractor bids range anywhere from $4,000 to $16,000. Petrossi also said they have $50,000 to work with for properties outside the eligible. Those will be demolished in the near future.
