STEUBENVILLE, Ohio -- Big changes are potentially on their way to downtown Steubenville with word of a proposed “Town Square” or “Civic Plaza” by city leaders and stakeholders.
It’s an idea that was discussed during the city’s second meeting focusing on the Comprehensive Plan.
During the meeting, leaders checked in on two already formed committees -- the Beautification Committee and Trails and Greenways -- and also formed three new ones in Healthy Lifestyles, Economic Development, and a Civic Plaza Committee. The Civic Plaza is likely to be that group’s first big project, specifically to close Market Street between the Courthouse and the new Municipal Building and create a green space.
The hope is to have a big kick-off event, putting the Civic Plaza in the spotlight to get people excited about the entire Comprehensive Plan.
"Many communities have a town square, or a focal point of the downtown where people can gather, and we'd really like to create that here,” said Urban Projects Director Chris Petrossi. “And we think that we're in a unique situation where we have the courthouse and the city building so close together, and we think that's really a key area to focus on.”
Another phase discussed briefly during the meeting was the consideration of a downtown hotel. Petrosi said the location would be just outside of the civic space in the area near the downtown post office.
In the next few weeks, the committees developed Wednesday will begin meeting with everyone coming together again for a progress report on July 8.
