BROOKE COUNTY, W.Va. – Brooke County has had to deal with substantial cuts in its budget each year, continually bringing bad news for the Sheriff’s Department and other city employees.
County Commissioners are working to get their next budget plan in order. Even though they have seen a decrease in the number of deputies and have had to make sacrifices, they say they will work through it.
"The (Sheriff’s) Department has been beaten up over the past 2 years,” Commissioner Jim Andreozzi said. “I mean we're asking to do more for less, and it’s tough. … From 18 deputies – that’s the normal operating number -- we're down to 14 deputies right now."
Even working with less, Andreozzi said the Sherriff’s Department is continuing to work extremely hard.
"And it’s an issue – it’s a problem,” he said. “There are some things that have been going on in the county that have made it worse of a problem, and the Sheriff has been good, his deputies have been good, spending practically their lives in those cruisers. And when this (budget) gets better -- and I hope it gets better -- we'll have to fix some of those things too."
Deputies aren't alone. County employees have also had to face some bad news because of the financial strain.
"We didn’t anticipate any raises for the employees,” Andreozzi said. “Unfortunately, there are some people in this building who haven't had a raise in 8 years."
He said they did not have a good year but he's hopeful to see positive changes in the near future.
“We're north and it’s moving north and we have a good opportunity ahead of us,” he said. “There’s some good things being talked about in Brooke County about companies relocating here and bring some jobs, pay benefits into the area."
Andreozzi is also hoping for oil and gas taxes. He said that should bring light to the end of the tunnel, while the Northern Panhandle BDC continues working to bring in new business.
