JEFFERSON COUNTY, OH

Tuesday, the Ohio Department of Transportation announced they may try to buy more salt to supply the state since the winter has already caused cities and towns to use a majority of their stockpile.

ODOT officials say they may order as much as 200,000 more tons of salt to prepare for a potentially snowy February.

The salt was also a topic of conversation at Steubenville city council meeting Tuesday and officials say they're keeping a close eye on their supply.

City Manager Tim Boland says that their salt supply is monitored daily and that the supply affects all jurisdictions in the area.

Currently, ODOT is approaching 1,000,000 tons of salt for the state this year which is far greater than their normal supply of about 600,000 tons.

Boland says that Steubenville is researching their own supply and will decide later on if they need to gather more from the state.

The salt from ODOT would be spread out to seven strategic locations throughout the state to provide to cities, towns, and villages which need to re-stock their supply.
