JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio – Whether it's books, or technology, or money, in Eastern Ohio, state government representatives said it's not easy for local school districts to compete with others in Ohio during a brief news conference in Brilliant at the Office for the Ohio Education Association.
They blame much of it on a growing number of cuts to education funding. On Thursday, they addressed their concerns, and criticism of state policy was strong.
State Representative -- and state auditor challenger -- John Patrick Carney, who was the main speaker, cited Ohio's failure to keep education as a top priority. He said the No. 1 problem is charter schools. Too many tax payer dollars are being used to support a system that is failing, he said.
"We should be investing in average kids here in the community and average families and giving them a chance and that comes from the education system," Carney said.
"We feel that east Ohio often – and I felt this years ago no matter who was governor -- we often get left out,” added Representative Jack Cera. “Not only east Ohio in the area of local government funding, millions and billions that have been taken away from the local government.
“School districts have not seen increases even though the Supreme Court years ago ruled that Ohio’s method of funding – reliance on property tax -- was unconstitutional."
Carney says too many dollars that should stay locally are heading to Columbus, mainly through the income tax.

Note
Just after the news conference was completed, State Senator Lou Gentile provided a rebuttal to claims he saw that were made by Governor John Kasich about the Severance Tax, which aired just the other night. On NEWS9 Tonight at 11, we’ll have the Senator’s response.
