HANCOCK COUNTY, W.Va. -- U.S. Sen. Jay Rockefeller was honored for a lifetime of service to the state’s steel industry Monday at the Serbian Cultural Center in Weirton.
During a speech, Rockerfeller (D-W.Va.) spoke about how he arrived early Monday just to take a drive through the city, a place he said he's considered a huge part of his life throughout his 50-year career.
He said working on behalf of the Northern Panhandle and steelworkers throughout West Virginia has been among his greatest honors.
Rockefeller also discussed his plans not to run again this year, and what that could mean for the state going forward.
He said he will still actively stay involved with the industry and with West Virginia politics.
Also in attendance was Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown.
Rockefeller gave the senator a ringing endorsement. Brown will  assume the leadership of the Senate Steel Caucus once Rockefeller's term comes to a close.
