HANCOCK COUNTY, W.Va. -- A new smartphone app is being developed in Hancock County. The new app will alert residents and people in other counties about any local emergencies.

Times are changing with technology and it's important to keep up with it. The new app that is in the process of development is called "Heads Up" and will alert residents in real time. I spoke to the sheriff of Hancock County, Ralph Fletcher, who is excited to bring this to the many different generations.

He says, “we’re trying to give people a heads up as to what’s going on around them in real time and by using it on a smartphone or an a android we're able to do that.”

The new app will not only help people in Hancock County, but also other counties in the Ohio Valley.
Fletcher says this will help people who are traveling “Say we had an accident and we had to close down a section of Route 2; residents would know that ahead of time, and you can plan your trip, plan your route and do what you need to."

The app was developed by Mountain State Computer and Network Solutions, which is a Huntington based company that was the first to utilize the “Heads Up” app.

Fletcher says it was purchased by Hancock County through the commissioners for $30,000.
"We will need to back that grant up with an additional two to $3,000 from the commission," he said.

The app will be available later in the year and will be free to users for download. It is available from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store, along with another app that Hancock County has developed.

The app will send alerts directly from local and state police departments.
