Local church helping community with Gas Buy-Down

Updated: Wednesday, March 26 2014, 06:11 PM EDT
HANCOCK COUNTY, W.Va. Gas Buy-Down, an initiative by the Brooke Hills Free Methodist Church local church to ease the burden on local residents by offering a reduced rate at the pump, is expanding.
It coincides with the opening of a new campus for their church in Hancock County, but the sole purpose of holding the promotion isn't necessarily to draw people to the sermon on Sundays, but rather to pay it forward.
The concept is actually quite simple. You pull up to the pump, pay for your reduced rate, and once your tank is full you're on your way.
We want to do practical things in practical ways, Brooke Hills Free Methodist Church Pastor Bryce Grieco said. We want to demonstrate that love, and we feel like it doesn't get much more practical than helping people fill up their gas tanks with gas.
At the Smith station in New Cumberland last Saturday, customers saved 50 cents on every gallon of gasoline up to 15 gallons.
Unleaded gas was $3:07 per gallon. If you're wondering how it works, the church cuts a check and makes up for the difference
But why?
What we really want in the heart of this is community development, Grieco said. We live in these communities, we love our community, and we love where we live and we want to make it a better place and so we feel like the church is not just a Sunday thing, it should be an everyday thing.
The church is starting a branch campus in Hancock County in April to replace the recently closed New Cumberland Free Methodist Church.
We think the people that make up the church should be out in the community, making the community where they live a better place to live, Grieco said. And we feel like the Gas Buy-Down does that. It helps our community live a little better.

The church will be holding one more Gas Buy-Down on April 12 in Newel. Their previous locations for the promotion have included Chester and New Cumberland.
The churchs satellite campus opening is Aril 27 at the Mountaineer Casino.
