NEW CUMBERLAND, W. Va. --

A former police officer turned himself in to authorities after he allegedly sent nude pictures to a 16-year-old girl.

Twenty-six-year-old Eric Maruca of New Cumberland turned himself in on a felony warrant, and appeared in Hancock County Magistrate Court Monday.  He is charged with distributing obscene matter to a minor.

According to the two-page criminal complaint filed in Hancock County Magistrate Court, Maruca started communicating with the girl over text message on Sept. 7 and 8.

The complaint alleges that he sent sexually explicit pictures of himself to the girl, and asked for photos in return.  The complaint states that photos of her were exchanged where she was exposed.

The West Virginia State Police received a forensic report on Sept. 10.

The Hancock County sheriff confirmed that Maruca was a former officer in New Cumberland and Chester.

According to the complaint, the felony charge can be punishable by a fine of up to $25,000 and a prison sentence of up to five years.

Maruca posted 10 percent of his $5,000 bond Monday, and is due in court again Friday at 9 a.m.
