HANCOCK COUNTY, W.Va.--

The former Chester police officer facing sexting charges appeared in Hancock County Magistrate Court Friday.

Attorney Robert McCoid of Wheeling has been hired to represent 26-year-old Eric Maruca, the former officer facing a felony charge of distributing obscene matter to a minor.

A criminal complaint filed in Hancock County Magistrate Court last month states that Maruca exchanged nude photos with a 16-year-old girl.  However, Maruca told authorities he was told the girl was 17.

Meanwhile, the Chester police department has been interviewing to fill vacancies at the department since Maruca was officially fired by city council on Oct. 21.

Shuman said that another officer resigned in recent weeks due to personal reasons.

Councilman Steve Shuman said that council has interviewed three people.  The positions have been offered to two, and council is waiting on medical transcripts before the officers can start.

Shuman said there are currently four officers at the department, and the police chief recommends six officers.  Shuman said the officers have been working overtime to make sure all shifts are covered, but they are eager to get the department up to full force.

Maruca’s preliminary hearing has been rescheduled for Dec. 20 at 1 p.m.
