HANCOCK COUNTY, W.Va. --

The Hancock County Sheriff's Office is seeking an armed man who robbed a Newell store Tuesday.

Sheriff Ralph Fletcher said the man robbed Phillies Quick Stop at 106 Washington St. just before 8 p.m.

Fletcher said the robber brandished a firearm and demanded money from the clerk. The robber then took cash from a drawer and fled the store, heading south across the parking lot.

The robber appeared to be between 30 and 40 years old, about 5 feet 6 inches tall and was wearing a dark brown or green jacket with the hood of a sweatshirt pulled up over a baseball cap. The robber was wearing a ski mask and black gloves.

Detective Matt Harvey of the Hancock County Sheriff's Office said, "The only evidence we have right now is video surveillance. The officers arrived on scene and canvassed the area, checked with other businesses and were checking those other businesses for video surveillance also."

Police say this type of crime happens often during the holiday season, and caution residents and business owners to be on guard.
