Wellsville mourns Police Chief

Updated: Thursday, May 8 2014, 05:33 PM EDT

WELLSVILLE, Ohio -- Word spread quickly Thursday morning that longtime Wellsville Police Chief Joe Scarabino had passed away. Members of his family and friends said he died around 6 a.m. at an area hospital.
All day, people have been stopping by the Village Building to share stories and to honor the man they called “Chief” for 13 years.
In fact, Scarabino spent 34 of his 58 years at the Police Department. It’s a place where he became well known for his big heart and hands-on approach.
“Clear up until the end, he was still being the Police Chief,” Lt. Ed Wilson said. “I took a new guy up there and introduced him to Joe and Joe started questioning him about this and that. So to speak, Joe is more than a brother to me. I'm going this him. I'm really going missing, and I think everybody here's going to miss him.”
Officials said the Chief had been on medical leave since October. Scarabino leaves behind his wife and his five children.
