COLUMBIANA COUNTY, Ohio -- A local country recording artist from Columbiana County is captivating music lovers and lawmakers alike.
Efforts are underway to get Zach Paxon's song titled “Ohio” named as the official country song of the state.
It's specifically House bill 330, authored by State Rep. Nick Barborak, D-Lisbon.
The lyrics lay out a love of the landscape and the hard workers you will meet in the Buckeye State.
It highlights the things you'll see as you travel across what Paxson calls “a great place to call home.”
The song was born from a 2006 trip taken to Austin, Texas, where Paxson watched Ohio State beat the University of Texas.
“I was blown away by the amount of support that the Ohio State Buckeyes got that far away from home,” Paxson said. “Half the stadium was flooded with scarlet and grey. The streets were flooded after the victory with scarlet and gray. There were all of these Ohio State jerseys and all these Ohioans showing their pride.”
That pride filled Zach’s heart and got his hands writing the moment he jumped on a plane to return home from Texas to eastern Ohio.
“Columbiana County is not the hotbed for the music business,” Paxson said, but I travel to Nashville as much as I need to. He has also visited Georgia in his quest to hit the big time.
And he’s also working with producers in Steubenville at Innovation Studios.
Paxon's first single, produced independently, reached No. 60 on the country music charts with no promotions or radio tour. This time he's planning to put some “ammunition” behind his next album release, turning the volume way up on his music career.
“It's progressing, if I didn't think it was progressing, I wouldn't still be trying," he said.
Paxson is getting ready to record a new single, and he's amping up for his next big show at the Hard Rock cafe in Pittsburgh's Station Square.
Opening for him is another local recording artist, Dessa Zuccaro. The two will take stage at 10 p.m. Saturday, April 19.
As for what happens at the state capitol, NEWS9 will track the song’s progress for you and let you know when, or if, Ohio becomes the state's official country song.
