Wellsville, OH --

A fatal shooting investigation is underway in Wellsville.

Wellsville Police Lieutenant Ed Wilson told NEWS9 that Taru Smith, 36, of Lorain, died after being shot several times.

"We had a couple vehicles apparently coming north on Clover St. between 12th and 13th. One was in the car passing and shot several shots at the other car," Wilson said.

Officials say the incident happened just before 6 o'clock.

"I was just sitting around looking out the window and I saw the car hit the back end of that car and next thing I knew… there was a crime scene,” said resident Becky Burr. “All the police were out looking for who did this. It's ridiculous."

Investigators say Smith Was taken to East Liverpool City Hospital where he died as a result of his injuries. Officials tell NEWS9 that 4 or 5 shots were fired and some of them hit Smith, but in the chaos that ensued the shooter got away.

"We're looking for possibly a white Mazda, a newer model car. In addition to a dark skinned black male,” said Wilson.

Many on scene began to speculate about how or why this happened, which is likely a question for investigators. But a sizeable seizure at the victim's home back in November only leads to suspicions of drug activity.

"I can't say it is or isn't. I don't have a clue at all other than there was a shooting,” said Wilson. “We can't put that on drugs at this time. We have no leads on if that happened here at all."
