Early morning house fires deemed suspicious

Updated: Friday, March 21 2014, 01:13 PM EDT

EAST LIVERPOOL, Ohio— The East Liverpool Fire Department was called out to fight fires at two neighboring homes  just after 2 a.m. Friday.
The homes, which were vacant,  are located along a dead-end street off of Dresden Avenue near McKee Street.
Initially, three firefighters responded to the three-alarm fire, and then nine others were called in to assist with the heavy smoke and flames.
Both homes are a total loss, and at 9 a.m. when crews were still on the scene battling heavy smoke to put out hot spots, all that remained was a front porch and two brick chimneys.
"We’re trying to keep the smoke down because you have the highway traffic, basically it's just steaming right now,” Assistant Fire Chief, Eric Croxall said.
AEP was called in Friday morning to cut power to nearby lines.
Croxall tells NEWS9 that the location of Friday morning’s fires is familiar to the firefighters; they fought a blaze at the same house a little over a week ago.
"It was actually under investigation when they got this one, so now it's going to be a bigger investigation,” Croxall said.  “It's kind of overwhelming a little bit because (with) the limited manpower we have, we're trying to investigate all of them.  It's a big task.”

Croxall says the city is currently investigating a number of suspicious fires. Stay with NEWS9 for further developments.
