Troopers ready for holiday weekend

Thirty-four million drivers are expected to be on the road this weekend, according to a national AAA estimate, up 2 million from last year. Here in the Valley, troopers said they'll be ready.

"This weekend, we have 100 percent manpower scheduled across all three shifts. And we also have federal overtime that we have almost 60-plus hours signed up for," said Lt. Joe Fetty.

Fetty is with the patrol post in Wintersville and added that both main roads and back roads will be busy and potentially dangerous with the threat of drunken drivers.

"We have right now about 50 percent of our fatals in Jefferson and 50 percent in Harrison attributed to alcohol. It's a problem across the state and here locally."

In addition to the "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign, DUI checkpoints have been popping up across the state. Fetty said they are not random, but based on statistics and by law must be announced. Despite that fact, he said they still work.

"They are very effective. We just conducted one a couple weeks ago and we had driving under suspension violations and OVI violations right through the checkpoint as well as some illicit drugs," Fetty said.

Fetty reminds everyone to buckle up, slow down and get a designated driver.
