Tuesday’s election brought about another levy failure for cash-strapped Edison Local School District.

District voters have not approved new money for the schools since 1977. This school year, busing at the high school had to be cut to save money.

The levy failed by just 31 votes. Superintendent Bill Beattie said the defeat has set the district back.

“The levy not passing last night ends up putting us in a position that, now, even if we decide to put the levy back on some time, either in May or November, we are not going to realize any of that revenue until January 2015,” Beattie said.

An emergency levy is scheduled to be on the ballot in November 2014. Beattie is hesitant to put two issues on the ballot at the same time. He said the district will have to be careful about hiring new faculty.

“If we have teachers retire, we see if that position can be cut. If we are going to hire somebody to replace, we are looking to replace that veteran teacher with somebody coming right out of college,” Beattie.

Beattie plans to ask for a recount.
