BROOKE COUNTY, WV

A project which has been in city council discussion since 2009, is finally taking shape in Wellsburg.

The town looks to gain new life by renovating its town square and a portion of Charles Street.

The project was officially approved Tuesday by a 4-3 margin to start making moves towards renovations on the town square.

Currently, the town square has been in existence since 1985 and is in need of improvements.

Benches, lights and mainly bricks and concrete need to be replaced to make a safer and more updated space.

The cost of the project is expected to cost about $405,000. Wellsburg has grant money totaling approximately $365,000 and the difference is to be made up by the city.

The project will focus on the town square as well as Charles Street between 6th and 7th streets. Mayor Sue Simonetti says there are grants in the process for 7th to 9th street renovations as well.

Construction is scheduled to start in the late summer or early fall of this year. It is all dependent on how the design and contracting process goes during the next stage of the project.
