BROOKE COUNTY, W.Va. --

Police in Brooke County said property crimes are on the rise and they want the public to know they are taking the issue head-on.

In the last month alone, County Prosecutor Joe Barki said he has worked to get six felony indictments for burglaries committed across the county.

"It's really become an epidemic here in Brooke County with homes being broken into and citizens having things stolen. It all stems in great part from the drug problems we have in our community as well as the neighboring communities," he said.

Sheriff Chuck Jackson told NEWS9 the majority of the break-ins are being committed by a small handful of people, a group he is trying to keep behind bars for as long as he can.

"It doesn't bode well for regional jail bill, but the cost of having certain people out of jail far exceeds the cost of keeping them in," Jackson said.

He said he plans on increasing patrols, but the help of the public is needed too by calling in any suspicious activity.

"It's a good thing. We need more cops walking the streets and more people reporting it in," agreed resident Kurt Pearson.

"We need to make sure we focus and that people who are responsible for committing those crimes are prosecuted aggressively, so we can try to get a little more security for people in their community," said Barki.
