A Weirton man is accused of stabbing another man more than once in the head and neck area.

The stabbing happened between 9 and 10 p.m. Monday in the 100 block of North 10th Street.

Tony Liberty Varlas, 38, of Weirton, was arrested early Tuesday and charged with malicious wounding.

Officials with the Weirton Police Department were given a heads-up by Steubenville police after some of the victim's friends drove him to Trinity Medical Center.

When asked what led to the events leading up to the stabbing, Weirton police Lt. Greg Moodie said Tuesday afternoon, "At this time, we'd rather not release that. … These gentlemen went to visit Varlas and the situation happened at the residence."

Shortly after the victim was interviewed by police, he was transported by medical helicopter to a Pittsburgh-area hospital. No details about him or his condition are being released.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Varlas remained in the West Virginia Northern Regional Jail on $25,000 bond.
