A proposed energy-saving program for the city of Weirton has been tabled until the new year.

The project is an energy overhaul for several city buildings, including the Millsop Community Center and the City Building. It also includes replacing existing traffic lights with LED lights.

Mayor George Kondik said the city council has too many questions about the project regarding cost and a specific breakdown of potential savings.

He said he is glad these questions are being asked by the council now, rather than later.

“One of the questions is: ‘How do we anticipate in five years? Seven years? Do we have a guarantee?’ And, one of the big questions was we finally got the contract and council members wanted to look at the contract […] We have to subcontract. There’s a lot of things and a new question. Now, you have 30 days to answer those questions. It’s not as easy as saying, ‘Fine. This is what it is,’” Kondik said.

Had this project been approved, the planned start date was sometime in March 2014.

The city’s budget workshop is in February – that’s when the discussion will continue.  Kondik is optimistic the project will still happen.
